Premier League clubs have agreed to a major rule change when action resumes, which will see up to five substitutions made inside a 90-minute fixture.

The league is scheduled to restart on 17 June, after breaking for more than two months since March due to the current global pandemic.

Premier League agrees on new normal

Ahead of its restart, the 20 member clubs met on Thursday to discuss special measures that will be undertaken from when the action resumes.

It was agreed that the number of substitutions made by each team during a game will increase from three to five for the remainder of the season.

“For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players,” the Premier League said in a statement on Thursday.

“Shareholders also approved for clubs to increase the maximum number of substitute players on the bench from seven to nine for the rest of the 2019/20 season.”

Frantic period ahead for England’s elite

The Premier League will restart with two matches penned down for 17 June, the much-anticipated clash between Arsenal and Manchester City at The Etihad, along with the Villa Park encounter between Aston Villa and Sheffield United.

The four clubs are the only outfits in the league with a game in hand apiece.

From there on, all nine rounds of fixtures will be played behind closed doors, with dates and kick-off times still to be confirmed.

Liverpool currently lead the log standings, with a 25-point gap on their closest rivals Man City, who will need to avoid defeat to the Gunners to remain in the hunt for an unlikely title defence.

The Merseyside giants are chasing their first-ever league title since England’s top-flight was remodelled to the Premier League in 1992.
